The order of a bonus: which money goes first
One question decides the whole outcome of a bonus: which money goes down first when you stake — real or bonus. The answer is a single sentence in the operator terms, and finding it matters more than knowing the size of the offer.
The one sentence to find
Bonus terms run to dozens of clauses and most of them do not matter. One sentence does: which balance goes down first when you stake. There are two possible answers and they lead to completely different outcomes.
- Real balance first. Your own money is spent before the bonus is touched. If a win lands on the real balance it can be withdrawn, because the wagering requirement has not started to bind yet. This is the friendlier arrangement.
- Bonus balance first. Every stake counts toward the wagering requirement and wins land on the bonus balance — so completing the requirement is the only way to withdraw them. This is where «free money» stops being free.
Finding that sentence in the terms matters more than knowing the size of the offer. The size is on the face of the advertisement; the order is inside the terms.
The five steps of a bonus
One question decides the whole outcome of a bonus: which money goes down first when you stake. The answer is written in the operator terms and it has two shapes.
Step 1: The bonus is claimed
A bonus usually has to be claimed BEFORE the deposit or at the same moment. Once the deposit is on the balance the claim window may be closed.

Step 2: Two balances appear
Real balance and bonus balance are counted separately. Which one is spent first — real-first or bonus-first — is stated in the terms and it changes the outcome.

Step 3: Wagering starts counting
A wagering requirement counts only certain games and only at a certain rate: 100 % on slots, often 10 % or 0 % at a live table. The rate depends on the operator.

Step 4: The maximum stake caps you
While a bonus is active the stake per round is capped by rule. Breaking the cap can void the bonus entirely — the first prohibition that follows the claim.

Step 5: The requirement ends, or the clock does
Meet the requirement and the bonus becomes real money; run out of time and the bonus plus anything left of it is removed. Which of the two arrives first is the whole difference.

How a wagering requirement is counted
A wagering requirement is usually written as a multiple of the bonus amount, and each stake counts toward it at a certain rate. The rate depends on the game type and appears as a table in the operator’s terms: slots often at 100 %, table games at 10 % or 20 %, live dealer tables sometimes at 0 %. In practice that means a player at a live table may not be advancing the requirement at all — and the only way to know is to read the terms.
The second clause that matters is the maximum stake. While a bonus is active the stake per round is capped by rule, and breaking that cap once can void the bonus entirely, winnings included. It is the harshest step in the sequence, because it cannot be undone.
The third is time. If the window for meeting the requirement runs out, the bonus and whatever is left of it are removed. So at the last step two events race each other: the requirement completing and the clock expiring. Whichever arrives first decides the outcome.
Where it crosses the withdrawal
An active bonus closes the second step of the withdrawal sequence: the bonus part of a balance cannot leave until the requirement is met. So deciding to claim a bonus is not only a decision about the bonus — it is a decision about the way the money comes back. The six steps of a withdrawal set that out in full.
One clarification: no bonus amount, rate or time window is printed on this page. They differ between operators and we have no measurement of our own — a specific figure is only valid in that operator’s own terms. That is exactly what the mark beside each step here says.
How to check
- Do not claim a bonus before opening its terms — a claim happens once and is not reversed.
- Search the terms for «wagering», «contribution» and «maximum stake»; the three may not sit in the same place.
- Find which balance is spent first. If it is not written, ask support in writing so you keep a copy of the answer.
- Check your limits are already set before claiming: a bonus increases stake volume, and a limit is the only thing holding it.
